My natural skincare business was started with a cause that resonates with many parents who, like me, have had children suffering from sensitive skin and eczema. Eczema is a common skin condition that can be distressing and uncomfortable for both children and adults. Traditional skincare products often contain harsh chemicals and synthetics that can exacerbate symptoms, making it difficult to find safe and effective products for sensitive skin. Indeed high street products and over the counter remedies only worsened my children’s sensitive skin.
As a concerned parent, I recognised the need for natural and gentle skincare options for my children and decided to take matters into my own hands. Dartmoor Skincare offers a range of natural skincare products that are free from harmful chemicals and synthetic ingredients. My products are specifically formulated to soothe and nourish sensitive skin.
I have been a practising beauty therapist on Dartmoor since 2003 and so have had an interest in skincare for some time. My original training and first qualification in this field was in Reflexology. I trained in Covent Garden in London. This has paved the way to me becoming a beauty therapist and eventually starting The Dartmoor Skincare Company.
For several years I was a self employed reflexologist whilst also doing occasional work with Macmillan and The Mustard Tree at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, providing reflexology appointments for cancer patients and their families. At this time I also volunteered at Look Good Feel Better workshops in the hospital, teaching ladies how to use skincare and makeup to combat some of the side effects of their treatment.
In 2011 I started working in a small salon on Dartmoor where I trained in different treatments, including facials, massage, waxing, tinting and manicures and pedicures. A few years later I started working as a self employed Therapist and Tara’s Treatments was born. I have two treatments rooms; one in Plymouth and one in Yelverton.
Specialising in facials I became passionate about the products I would use on my clients skin, looking for excellent results but with skin sensitivities in mind. I was keen to avoid harsh chemicals and ingredients that didn’t sit well with me as I know our skin absorbs so much of what we put on to it. My experience of my own children’s eczema and working with cancer patients made me very aware of this.
Creating The Dartmoor Skincare Company allowed me to make products from scratch so I knew exactly what I was using in my treatments. Peace of mind for me also as I know experiments on therapists hands have shown a high degree of chemical saturation on their skin due to the amount of different products they would use, most containing chemicals you really wouldn’t want to put on your skin.
Running both Tara’s Treatments and The Dartmoor Skincare Company allows me to maintain a hands on approach by providing treatments for my clients while also creating fantastic products suitable for sensitive skin that I can use in my treatments and also sell online and in shops.

The Dartmoor Skincare Company started at my kitchen table in 2017. As the business has grown, my recipes for the skincare range are recreated in a laboratory in Devon. My mum and I still make all the soap and hair bars in our own kitchens. These bars are made using traditional methods that cannot be recreated in a laboratory.
